These Mute Swans on Lake Ontario Are Stunning

These beautiful Mute Swans (Cygnus olor) were foraging in Lake Ontario. These are large beautiful birds that I have been seeing more often now that I am looking. They were off the shores of Presqu’ile Provincial Park between the park and Prince Edward County. Near the light house looking east the swans came swimming up and we had a great view of many of them.

The Mute Swan (Cygnus olor) is one of the world’s largest waterfowl and one of three swan species that occur in North America. Huge white bird with long neck, reddish-orange bill, and black face. Adults have a black knob on top of the bill. Immatures are dusky brown with a gray bill. Native to northern Europe and Asia, but introduced in many regions, where it is now common on ponds, lakes, and calm coastal waters. Very aggressive toward native waterfowl. Often seen in pairs or small family groups.
